Revelation Series

“Reading Revelation Today”

Speakers
J. Nelson Kraybill
Loren L. Johns

The sessions will be held on the four Wednesday evenings in March at 6:30pm at Silverwood Mennonite Church in Goshen . Everyone is invited. Bring a Friend.

March 7 • “First Century Context” • J. Nelson Kraybill
The focus will be on the first-century context of Revelation: why it’s important, what we know about the people for whom John wrote the book. We will visit places in Turkey where the audience of Revelation lived and look at how the first-century Christians’ participation in a society focused on worship of the emperor makes a difference for our reading of Revelation.

March 10 • “Understanding the Left Behind Series” • Loren L. Johns
Tonight we will begin our consideration of the Left Behind series. We will examine the industry and learn about the series’ vision of what God is doing in the world. Loren will share what he appreciates about the Left Behind series.

March 17 • “Understanding the Left Behind Series II” • Loren L. Johns
We will look into the Left Behind series in more depth, examining its portrayal of Jesus and its understanding of Christian discipleship, as well as its vision for the end times. In addition, Loren will explain and critique some of the main features of “dispensational” theology. Loren will share some cautions about the series.

March 24 • “What Are We Waiting For?” • Text: Rev. 21–22
Here we will think about Christ’s return and study the question, “What are we waiting for?” We will review what the Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective says about our future hope and how that connects with Revelation.

Dr. J. Nelson Kraybill is President of Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary. An ordained minister, Nelson has served as a pastor and as a missionary worker at London Mennonite Centre. Dr. Loren Johns is Academic Dean of AMBS. Also an ordained minister, Loren has served as pastor, theology book editor for Herald Press, and Bible professor at Bluffton University .
